“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

Arthur C. Clarke

Teletext, first invented some 30 years ago, utilizes the “vertical blanking interval” lines that together form the dark band dividing pictures horizontally on the television screen. Technically it has remained almost unchanged until recently when TV became digital. Teletext being an amazing success story still attracts millions of visitors daily for the latest news headlines, weather reports or sports results.

The potential of Teletext as an tool for artistic expression has not yet been fully discovered though the aesthetics of Teletext have slowly creeped in to the most fashionable street ware, graffiti and fine art. Is the next big word in intellectual small talk of the hip, rich and famous going to be teletextualism? Time will show, but since it happens The International Teletext Art Festival gives the possibility to the Teletext users to decide for themselves.

Participating artists:
LIA, Manuel Knapp, UBERMORGEN, Daniel Egg, Marc Lee, Raquel Meyers, Kathrin Günter, Max Capacity, Dragan Espenschied, Jarkko Räsänen, Seppo Renvall , Juha van Ingen, Cordula Ditz, John Lawrence and Goto80

A group of experts (Paul B. Davis, Voin de Voin and Rosa Menkman) will select one of the participating artists to receive the Teletext Art Prize. You too can vote for your favourite artwork.

Star Shots 3 Feature: Photomediations Machine

Screenshot at 2013-07-31 13:15:11

Katier is very happy to be part of this months’ selection of the
Photomediations Machine!

Photomediations Machine is a curated online space where the dynamic relations of mediation as performed in photography and other media can be encountered, experienced and engaged.

Photomediations Machine adopts a process-based approach to image making by tracing the technological, biological, cultural, social and political flows of mediation that produce photographic objects.

Showcasing theoretical and practical work at the intersections of art and mainstream practices, Photomediations Machine is both an archive of mediations past and a site of production of media as-we-do-not-know-them-yet.

Photomediations Machine is non-commercial, non-profit and fully open access. Copyright remains with the original holders. Please do not reuse or republish any material from this site without obtaining permission first.

Curator
Professor Joanna Zylinska, Goldsmiths, University of London, UK

Associate Curator

Photomediations Machine is a sister project to the online open access journal Culture Machine, established in 1999. In trying to redraw the boundaries between media, technology, philosophy, culture and art, Culture Machine’s agenda has been explicitly ‘open-ended, non-goal orientated, exploratory and experimental’. Its machinic mode of operation indicates that its agencies and actions have not always been just human. It is this aspect of non-human production, both on the level of concepts and on the level of matter, that Photomediations Machine borrows from its older sibling.

The concept of mediation embedded in the idea of ‘photomediations’ points to the more processual understanding of media that has recently been taken up by scholars and artists alike. It suggests that the photograph as such does not exist. Instead, there are only multiple and ongoing processes of photomediation. Seen in this light, photography names an active practice of cutting through the flow of photomediation, where the cut operates on a number of levels: perceptive, material, technical, and conceptual. In other words, photography can be described as a practice of making good cuts. Performed by human and nonhuman agents alike, these cuts participate in the wider process of imagining the world. What we conventionally understand as ‘photographic practice’ is therefore only a part of Photomediations Machine’s wider focus.

Star Shots And The Ghost Tape by Raven Moore

Raven Moore, a newly formed artist duet of sound artist Marta Zapparoli and visual artist Kathrin Guenter join for the first time their particular artistic approaches and backgrounds to interrogate, manipulate and remodel the conspiratorial, dark side of the paparazzi and celebrity phenomenon.

A vast collection of original audio and visual footage of so-called “trainwreck” celebrities and pop stars like Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan or Lilly Allen, to name only a few, is the source and starting point which the artist duo immerse themselves in.

Audio, text and visual archives are carefully dissected, manipulated and finally reinterpreted by the artists to show how the perfectly calculated and constructed image and sound mask of the star or celebrity slowly cracks, breaks and changes under the constant pressure of public observation and perception.

This mask evidently cracks open, freeing a dubious doppelganger moving about in space incognito, syncing and miming a variety of mutilated, erstwhile catchy tunes which slowly vanish into a ghostly silence.

The first layer that will be presented is an audio-video installation introducing Raven Moore and their mysterious manipulations and mutilations of pop and paparazzi phenomena.

Occulto Magazine

Katier is delighted to be a contributor for the latest edition of the infamous Occulto Magazine! The high gloss volume Issue e: The Metamorphosis will be published round mid of June 2013

Occulto explores new possibilities in the popularisation of science in connection to other fields such as the visual arts, parascientific theories and history of ideas.

Occulto affirms the cultural value of scientific knowledge and the potential of an interdisciplinary approach opened to deviance and irony. Its research also questions past and present attempts to find shortcuts to knowledge (and power), the fascination towards the irrational and revealed truths.
What lies behind the insurmountable gap dividing humanities and science?

Katier shows: Haunted Hollywood, Poltergeist Paparazzi & Ghostly Glitterati

The hoax continues. Kathrin Günter is back! Though she has been noticeably absent from the Gossip Press for quite a while now, a close insider source reveals, that she’s finally returned,
eager and ready to haunt Hollywoods’ Celebrity Scene with yet another eerie escapade.

„After 5 years on/off gossip due to various ventures into rather occult territories, far beyond the red carpet, Kathrin Günter is apparently celebrating her Comeback to the tabloid papers with some new and devilish or rather double tricks to play within the celeb’s glamour world,“ according to our source. „Unlike the years before, she prefers to be out of the spotlight, and hides herself away behind the conspiratorial curtains of her Celebrity Darkroom,“ as the spooky gossip cutie calls it herself.

„Day-in-day-out she barricades herself behind the walls of her shady chateau, sees nobody but her closest circle of friends and barely leaves her luxurious mansion in Mittecito. She’s already planned it all. She’s also fed up being in the spotlight” the source reveals. “That’s why she is hiding her self away in her darkroom cabinet.”

Back in the year 2000 Günter already sucessfully whirlwinded through the celeb scene, on and off the red carpet, haunted the media in blurry and rather grainy cameos, irritated with self-staged dubious derailings; totally shameless, cool calculated, and recklessly retouched!
With her second coup, under the banner of the infamous topline ‘Star Shots – The Hot Mess Hall of Shame’, Kathrin Günter slips into characters of certain trainwrecks like Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears or Paris Hilton; roles she says she didn’t have to dig too deep to relate to.

“Living in the public eye, dealing with the stress of what other people say, whether it’s true or not,” she said in a Lifetime promotional clip. “I personally understand them because you’re living your life for everyone to see and people are growing with you. You get to a point where you become numb to it, and you just live your life in that way you feel you need to live it.”

As for her latest plot, so the source, „Kathrin Günter is holding secret seances in her Celebrity Darkroom, to conjure and literally catch the alleged ‘doubles’ or ‘doppelgaenger’ of some carefully selected and especially mediumistically skilled celeb’ stars.“ „It is said, reveals the source, „that she refers to the rather rakish routines of a certain William H. Mumler or Frederick A. Hudson, two of the most infamous Gossip Paparazzi of the 19th century.“

„During these secret spiritual seances, the prominent double gets separated from its original physical body to be able to move about in space independently. Once fully materialised, it is ready to get exposed, developed and fixed onto something what is called ‘light sensitive emulsion of silver gelatine’, in the very Celebrity Darkroom.“

Recent reports reveal, according to our source, that it happened already more than once, that the dubious double doesn’t seem to return to his original body and indulges in its newly gained freedom. Taken for the original celebrity, the paparazzi,as usual, flash their cameras blindly upon these evil twins.

The real dimension of this hilarious Hollywood hoax has yet to be announced, but we have collected already a few statements of some of the affected victims:

„At first glance I always think, that this is me on these pictures…
but I know, that I am prettier. Yes, I created this persona, but I know
that I am entirely different to her.“ Victoria Beckham

„I can’t believe how professional and down-to-earth I look. My double is
even more beautiful than me.“ Paris Hilton

„I’m not caught up in any of it. It’s not really part of my life.“
Nicole Kidman

„I am totally upset and very jealous of all the attention she gets.“
Britney Spears
